How to use the ebay fee calculator
- Pick the eBay category the item is listed in, and whether you pay for a Basic or higher eBay Store. Starter Store sellers pay the same rates as sellers with no Store.
- Enter the sold price, the shipping you charged the buyer and the buyer’s sales tax rate. eBay takes its percentage from all three together.
- Enter what you paid for the item and for the shipping label, and your promoted listing ad rate if the sale came from an ad.
- Read your profit, the fees broken down, and the net payout eBay sends you.
How eBay works out its fees
eBay charges one final value fee when an item sells. It is a percentage of the total amount of the sale, which is the item price plus shipping plus the sales tax the buyer pays, and then a per-order fee: $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above $10.
final value fee = total sale × category rate + per-order fee
In most categories the 13.6% (no Store) or 12.7% (Basic Store and higher) applies up to a cap per item, and only 2.35% is charged on the part above it. Some categories work differently: handbags, jewelry and bullion charge one rate on the whole sale depending on its size, watches use three tiers, and athletic shoes of $150 or more pay a lower rate with no per-order fee.
ad fee = total sale × your ad rate · profit = sold price + shipping charged − eBay fees − item cost − shipping paid
You do not keep the sales tax: eBay collects it from the buyer and pays it to the state. You do pay a fee on it.
Worked example
You sell a jacket in Clothing for $50 and charge $8 shipping. You have no eBay Store. The buyer pays 6% sales tax. The jacket cost you $15 and the label costs $7.50.
- Total sale: ($50 + $8) × 1.06 = $61.48.
- Final value fee: $61.48 × 13.6% = $8.36, plus the $0.40 per-order fee = $8.76.
- Net payout: $50 + $8 − $8.76 = $49.24.
- Profit: $49.24 − $15 − $7.50 = $26.74, a 46.1% margin on the $58 you charged.
With a Basic Store the rate drops to 12.7%: $61.48 × 12.7% + $0.40 = $8.21, so you keep $0.55 more. If the sale came from a promoted listing at a 5% ad rate, add $61.48 × 5% = $3.07 in ad fees.
